“Learning from the Silo” by Radhanath Swami

0 Posted by - January 17, 2013 - Radhanath Swami

A farmer generally uses a silo, which is a tower or pit on a farm, to store grains. You put some grains from the top of the silo; it comes down and you collect the grains at the bottom. Now, suppose the farmer puts very cheap, and rotten grains in his silo. And then he realizes from eating all those bad grains that it is not good for him , it is not good for his family. “Henceforth, I am going to use good grains.” Then he starts putting good grains, and better grains, and very very nice grains in the silo from top; but still he receives bad grains at the bottom. That means he is suffering for the past. But in future there is going to be great prosperity because of what he is doing now.

Similarly there are people who have been very pious and good in the past and they are getting the good grains of much prosperity and happiness. But because they are engaging in sinful activities now, they are putting the rotten grains on the top, and it is just a matter of time, till it all comes upon them.

True! As it is rightly said “‘The mills of the gods grind slowly but they grind exceedingly small’

  • Ramya January 17, 2013 - 12:50 pm

Radhanath Swami Maharaj uses a simple example to explain the point of reaping what we sow.

  • Anil Timbe January 17, 2013 - 4:52 pm

Such a beautiful lesson with help of real example. I’ll be careful not to put rotten grains in my silo.
Thanks to Radhanath Swami for sharing..

A very beautiful analogy has been used by Radhanath Swami to make us understand why bad things happen to good people & vice versa. His arguments are very logical and rational.

  • Arjun K Ramachandra January 19, 2013 - 6:12 am

This clearly explains why “bad” things happen to “good “people and vice versa.

  • Ravi Garg January 19, 2013 - 3:52 pm

    Very instructive story from Swamiji.

  • Citra Gopi DD January 20, 2013 - 6:29 pm

This are the Laws OF God.They are subtle in nature, though no one can see them by material eyes, they are on duty 24 hrs.and 365 days without rest. They have divine connection. It is possible to overcome them only when Soul under bonafide guidance restarts his service unto Supreme Personality Of Godhead,Sri Krishna, which the soul had left from time immemorial. This is the conclusion of Bhagvad-Gita.

  • Abhinav January 21, 2013 - 6:10 am

Amazing analogy to explain the law of karma spread on a duration of time.

  • Rathushan January 22, 2013 - 9:23 am

This makes me realize that there is so much to learn from the world around us.

  • Sumit Sharma January 26, 2013 - 12:36 am

Very nice message from Radhanath Swami. Law of karma works perfectly under the supreme direction of the material energy of Lord Krishna. One can escape from the rules and regulations of a government, but not from the clutches of Mayadevi (the divine energy of Lord Krishna).

This is a beautiful analogy to the oft-asked question: Why do bad things happen to good people, and vice versea?

Karma very nicely, &, in very simple words, explained through the silo example. Thank you Radhanath Swami!

  • Piyush Singh February 2, 2013 - 12:16 pm

  • Chandrika February 3, 2013 - 4:28 pm

Bhakti is the quickest way to eradicate our karma altogether.

  • Abhinav February 4, 2013 - 5:42 am

Its high time that I start acting “rightly” or I will reap bad grains in future. Thanks for being a true guide to me.

  • NavBhatt February 18, 2013 - 2:30 am

Bingo …Very nicely explained, We being the impatient generation who need everything on Click has to understand that with patience we need to feed good grains and wait for the results. Its works like LIFO register (Last In First Out)

    • Piyush Singh April 1, 2013 - 4:05 am

Nice comment….. I guess it should be FIFO (First In First Out) though. But may be not in that strict order always. Dhritrashtra got his 100 sons killed and asked Krishna later on that why he had to go through this pain. He was told that many hundred years ago he killed 100 cygnets of a swan. He asked that then why I’m suffering the effect of that now (after many births), the reply was because first he had to earn the pious credits to have 100 sons first.

Wonderful analogy to understand why bad things happen to good people or vice versa. Thank you Radhanath Swami for the illustrations……..such an important lesson but least understood and practiced.

  • Tejna Patodi April 4, 2013 - 8:40 pm

Impeccable. As you sow, so shall you reap. We suffer, not because God is unfair, but because we get the reactions of our own karma. Nature of Laws are very stringent.

  • ananda lila d April 7, 2013 - 9:42 pm

You do not get what you desire but will get what you deserve for sure…
    Reap what you sow…

  • ananda lila d April 7, 2013 - 9:44 pm

We believe stongly in the laws propogated by scientists…
Action had equal and opposite reaction…

There is a resistance to believe the laws of nature though…
May be because you do not see the results at once…
But these are proven laws…Shabda Praman….we must believe,…

  • ananda lila d April 7, 2013 - 9:46 pm

We are building our destinity for tomorrow….depending on how be act today…
What we have already acted yesterday is resulting in what we have as “destiniy” today…

Off course…supreme Lord has control over everything….He can change it…

  • Paramesvara Dasa June 2, 2013 - 12:52 am

From this one has to learn to do pnly good things and moreover for still better results do only inaction, devotional service to Krsna. All glories to HH Radhanatha Svami Maharaja.

  • Sanjiv August 31, 2014 - 2:09 pm

We cannot thank HH Radhanath Swami enough for enlightening us about how the law of KARMA acts. Without this philosophical understanding, there is a strong tendency to do something that is appartently attrative but is bad for us

  • sneha October 17, 2014 - 12:27 pm
